Reference

How data storage conversion works

Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000, while IEC binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. Both systems are listed explicitly so a gigabyte is never silently treated as a gibibyte.

Values are converted to byte first, then from that reference into the requested unit. Keeping a single documented reference reduces inconsistent pair-by-pair constants.

Accuracy note: SI decimal and IEC binary factors are exact and are never used interchangeably.

Questions

Data Storage FAQ

What is the reference unit for data storage conversions?

ConvertWin uses byte (B) as the internal reference for this category, then converts to the selected output unit.

How accurate is this data storage converter?

SI decimal and IEC binary factors are exact and are never used interchangeably.
